The MAP Programme started as a bridging initiative for students from disadvantaged communities. These students had the academic potential to succeed in the field of the Sciences and Commerce, but their Matriculation results were inadequate. This programme operated from 1992 to 1997. It has been superseded by EDUMAP Education Development Trust and its College, namely, EDUMAP College, which has moved beyond bridging to a transitional model of academic enrichment. The total number of students who have passed through the College since 1998 to 2020 is 1638, of whom 1060 have graduated from tertiary institutions while the others are still in the system of tertiary studies or learnership programmes or small business enterprises.
The college is a full time residential programme based at Mpiti House, 481 Marshall Street, Belgravia. The 2020 intake is comprised of 47 students (22 females and 25 males) from various provinces of South Africa identified in conjunction with the sponsoring companies. The results to date are pleasing and most students will meet the minimum two symbol improvement plus aligning their further education applications according to their strengths and desires. The College facilitates bursary and fund applications for further studies.
The academic year commences on 29 January 2021 followed by 10 months of intensive tuition until examinations are completed in November 2021. Each week comprises 35 hours of tuition. The year is divided by 4 terms which coincide with the Gauteng School Calendar.
The academic experience for the student is one year. The pre-planning needed with a potential sponsor needs to begin by November to ensure suitable candidates are selected. Recent financial support has included the mining sector, manufacturing industries and the transport sector. The sponsorship diversification provides a sustainable model for the college and targets sectors that all have a common purpose and need to identify quality students for further education.
